The western part of the Madrid Basin shows widespread arkosic deposits of Neogene age characterized by a massive appearance. On the basis of detailed geological mapping, five main stratigraphic units, ranging the Lower and Middle Miocene, have been distinguished in the area. These units can be correlated with the major Neogene units defined in the Madrid Basin. The stratigraphic correlation has been favoured by recent findings of mammal localities in the area.
