Paradoxografía griega: estudio de un género literario

Abstract

En este trabajo se ofrece una revisión de las características formales que definen la literatura paradoxográfica, los criterios conforme a los que se organizan sus contenidos, y la terminología que subraya el carácter extraordinario de los mismos. Todo ello no es sino un paso previo al resto de este trabajo, cuyo punto de partida es el estudio del posible perfil del público que consumía esta clase de literatura. En un contexto histórico en el que la posesión de libros es un lujo no al alcance de todos, merece la pena detenerse a considerar el papel que podía desempeñar un género dedicado a la divulgación de curiosidades de la ciencia. La revisión crítica de los materiales con los que contamos para emprender el estudio de la literatura de mirabilia es una tarea no exenta de complejidad, dado el mal estado de conservación en el que han llegado hasta nosotros la mayoría de las listas paradoxográficas de las que tenemos noticia. La pérdida de los textos originales obliga a mantener una especial cautela a la hora de atribuir un origen paradoxográfico a las referencias transmitidas de manera indirecta, sobre todo en aquellos autores a los que se atribuyen obras de diferentes géneros, puesto que los contenidos extraordinarios podían encontrarse en textos de casi cualquier tipo.
