Desarrollo y validación de nuevas pruebas de campo de inmunidad celular y molecular para la detección de la infección por Leishmania infantum

Abstract

La leishmaniasis es una de las enfermedades tropicales más desatendidas. El cambio climático, las migraciones masivas, las transformaciones ambientales y las condiciones de inmunodepresión han convertido a esta enfermedad en un serio problema de salud pública. A esto hay que sumarle la falta de medidas de control y de estrategias de eliminación que han ocasionado un aumento de los casos a nivel global, dando lugar a la aparición de nuevos brotes. Esta situación hace que continúe siendo necesario un diagnóstico rápido, fácil y sensible para establecer medidas de control más eficaces. A pesar de ello, las técnicas de diagnóstico actuales para confirmar la leishmaniasis visceral, monitorizar el éxito del tratamiento farmacológico o para detectar recaídas son difíciles de trasladar al campo. Otro desafío importante al que se enfrentan los programas de control es la identificación y manejo de los sujetos con infección asintomática, ya que no se conoce el papel que cumplen dentro de la epidemiología de la enfermedad.El foco principal de esta tesis doctoral ha sido la evaluación de diferentes pruebas de campo para el diagnóstico de los casos tempranos y la detección de la infección asintomática causada por L. infantum y L. donovani, así como el seguimiento tras tratamiento de pacientes con leishmaniasis visceral...
