Abstract

Se considera la espondiloartritis como una familia de enfermedades que comprende patologías como la espondilitis anquilosante(AS), la artritis psoriásica (AP), la artritis reumatoide (AR), las artritis relacionadas con las enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales , la enfermedad de Crohn, la colitis ulcerosa, las espondiloartritis indiferenciadas y la espondilitis anquilosante de inicio juvenil, siendo la primera de ellas la más común. La espondilitis anquilosante se trata de una enfermedad crónica inflamatoria cuyas manifestaciones aparecen en la columna vertebral, principalmente a nivel lumbar en su zona de unión a la pelvis. Se produce la inflamación de las articulaciones de la columna perdiéndose la flexibilidad y apareciendo rigidez, pudiendo incluso llegar a fusionarse las vértebras entre sí; de este hecho proviene el nombre de la enfermedad, del término griego ankylos, que significa fusión, soldadura. Esta enfermedad puede cursar junto con otras tales como psoriasis, inflamaciones oculares (uveitis) o del tubo digestivo. En este trabajo se ha revisado la bibliografía referente tanto a los mecanismos que dan lugar a la patología y sus manifestaciones así como las distintas opciones de tratamiento que existen actualmente y las ventajas que presentan unas sobre otras.
