Abstract

Este libro ofrece por primera vez el conjunto del epistolario de Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo: en él se reúne, junto con las cartas de Arévalo a los humanistas italianos arrestados en 1468 en el castillo de Sant’Angelo por orden de Pablo II bajo la acusación de conspiración política contra el poder papal, el resto de la correspondencia de una de las figuras fundamentales para entender algunas de las caracterís¬ticas del humanismo hispano en el siglo XV. Además de un amplio estudio introductorio, en uno y otro caso se ofrece la edición del texto latino, junto con un aparato crítico y de fuentes, y una traducción al castellano lo más fiel posible, en el fondo y en la forma, al original latino de cada una de las cartas. El estudio, edición y traducción se completan con un glosario de nombres propios y un índice de fuentes. “Ejemplo admirable el de aquel español que, sin haber salido totalmente del Medioevo, admira las conquistas del Humanismo (…), comprende la nueva (o vieja) mentalidad de los discípulos del Petrarca latino y trata de asemejarse a ellos en lo posible (...). ¿Quién se decidirá a hacer una edición crítica, anotada y completa de todas las cartas [de Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo]?” Ricardo García Villoslada Con esta obra se cumple por fin el deseo del eminente historiador García Villoslada de ofrecer una edición crítica, anotada y completa del epistolario del obispo español Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo (1404-1470), alcaide de la prisión papal de Sant’Angelo y una figura clave para entender las especificidades del humanismo español y las relaciones culturales entre España e Italia en el siglo XV.
