Abstract

La BPCO è una delle maggiori cause di morbosità, invalidità e morte nel mondo. La sua prevalenza è andata aumentando nell'ultima decade nel mondo occidentale, con un sostanziale incremento, associato all'incremento del fumo di sigaretta, nel sesso femminile. La prevalenza attuale risulta superiore al 10% negli adulti oltre i 40 anni. Essa è dipendente dall'incidenza e dalla durata della malattia. Grazie al maggior controllo dei fattori di rischio, ed in particolare del fumo di sigaretta, l'incidenza è uniformemente diminuita nei maschi e assai meno nettamente nelle donne, a probabile spiegazione del livellamento dei tassi di prevalenza in questi ultimi anni. Inoltre, grazie al miglioramento delle strategie terapeutiche, anche il tasso di mortalità in progressiva diminuzione contribuisce al mantenimento dei livelli di prevalenza. Le dimensioni di popolazione della BPCO ne determinano il carico di malattia e giustificano gli sforzi rivolti ad implementare tutte le possibili strategie di prevenzione e trattamento.
