We witness the disappearance of oral tradition that have been losing its effect in the age we are living. The elements of verbal culture have been carrying the memories of societies and determine the way of thinking during the ages. However today they just look like a century old plane while they are trying to transpose their roots to the stone as a final move. The ones who have shouldered oral traditions of these lands and who have carried the cultural codes from the past to today?s world for long years are being forgotten nowadays. Their names may differ by their own languages however their duties are similar. The subject of this study is one of these masters called Dengbéj.The first two chapters of the study consist of theoric parts related with cultural memory and verbal culture. The general aspects of cultural memory and collective memory doctrines were outlined in these two chapters. Beside these the general aspects of storytelling was also mentioned.Dengbéjs who are the main backbone of the Kurdish culture and who have established the Kurdish thinking that is based on oral tradition were examined in the last chapter along with the theoric material mentioned before. Dengbéjs? stories that can be seen as the establishing elements of collective memory were also examined in this chapter.In 1990?s the tradition of Dengbéjs was subjected to reproduction as a result of rise of Kurdish national consciousness. In the conclusion chapter, return of tradition of Dengbéjs with this reproduction process is discussed.

Yaşadığımız çağda etkisini yitirmekte olan sözlü geleneklerin tek tek kaybolup gitmelerine tanık oluyoruz. Çağlar boyunca insanlığı etkisi altına almış, düşünme biçimini belirlemiş ve toplumların belleklerini taşımış olan sözlü kültür unsurları, bugün artık uçurum kenarlarında köklerini son bir hamleyle taşlara geçirmeye çalışan fakat git gide düşen asırlık çınarlara benzemekteler. Bulunduğumuz topraklarda uzun yıllar boyunca söz konusu sözlü gelenekleri sırtlamış, geçmiş halk sınıflarının kültürel kodlarını günümüze kadar taşımış, adları mensup oldukları dillere göre değişen ama görevleri benzer birçok söz ustası unutuldu, unutulmakta. Bu çalışmanın konusu da bu ustalardan biri olan dengbéjlerdir.Çalışmanın ilk iki bölümünde kültürel bellek ve sözlü kültür üzerine teorik kısımlar oluşturuldu. Kültürel belleğin aktarılma biçimleri ve genel özellikleri, kolektif bellek kuramları ile ilgili yapılan tartışmalar başlıklar halinde verildi. Sözlü kültürün devam ettirilme biçimleri ve hikâye anlatıcılığının genel özelliklerinden bahsedildi.Üçüncü bölümde söz konusu teorik malzemeyle beraber Kürt kültürünün ana omurgasını oluşturan, Kürtlerin büyük ölçüde söze dayalı düşünme biçimlerini meydana getiren ve kolektif belleğin esas kurucu unsuru olan dengbéjler ve onların anlattığı hikâyeler incelendi.Son bölümde dengbéjlik geleneğinin 1990'lı yıllarda Kürt ulus bilincinin yükselmesi ile yeniden üretime tabi olması sonucu tekrardan gündeme gelmesi meselesi tartışıldı.
