Viabilidad poblacional de rollandia microptera (zambullidor del titicaca) en el Lago Titicaca, Perú

Abstract

Realicé este estudio en el sector peruano del lago Titicaca a partir de marzo del 2006 a julio 2007. Los objetivos fueron: determinar la viabilidad poblacional; estimar el riesgo de extinción; cuantificar el tamaño mínimo viable de la población; y determinar el tamaño óptimo del hábitat del zambullidor del Titicaca. Los métodos de estudio fueron variados y la colección de información la realicé a través de investigaciones de campo complementadas con investigaciones científicas publicadas de esta y otras especies dentro del mismo orden taxonómico. Utilicé el programa VORTEX 9.7 para los modelos de simulación de las poblaciones en un periodo de 100 años. Los resultados fueron: las poblaciones del zambullidor del Titicaca por encima de 100 individuos son viables en ausencia de actividades humanas, creciendo a una tasa promedio anual de 3.7% hasta alcanzar la capacidad de carga del hábitat. Sin embargo, las actividades humanas incrementaron el riesgo de extinción (probabilidad de extinción) de 0.2% (umbral de viabilidad) al 1% (umbral de extinción) en 100 años de simulación. Por otro lado, el tamaño mínimo viable debe ser superior a 100 individuos, pero para asegurar su supervivencia es mejor conservar a un tamaño efectivo poblacional de 100 parejas reproductoras; poblaciones menores al tamaño mínimo viable demostraron ser más vulnerables a las fluctuaciones medioambientales, demográficas, genéticas y humanas. Finalmente, el tamaño óptimo del hábitat debe ser suficiente para mantener a una población por encima de las 100 parejas reproductoras. También, en función al tipo de población y la configuración de los parches de hábitat en el lago Titicaca, se toma como metapoblación a la estructura poblacional del zambullidor del Titicaca. Estos resultados me llevan a sugerir que, para conservar poblaciones viables del zambullidor resulta adecuado prevenir que poblaciones grandes no se reduzcan que asegurar que poblaciones pequeñas no se extingan.
