Abstract

The War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay progressively fostered the development of cartoon journalism in the four belligerent nations. In the midst of that offensive of ideas and ideologies, the factions reached for pencil and paper, ink and printing. The reporters and chroniclers, turned into cartoonists, opted for the press platform, a place for the expression of public opinion and to make use of a new instrument in the political game: the satirical and burlesque press. This work shows the discursive construction on the Paraguayan government and people in the satirical press of Uruguay during the Great War from the review and analysis of approximately one hundred publications published between 1865 and 1868.
