Particulate reinforced aluminum alloy matrix composites (Al MMC's) with high strength, high resistance to wear and low density properties have become important in the aerospace and the defense industry recently, when compared to other similar engineering materials, novel composite materials can derive from the Al MMCs due to their superior properties This study was carried out in two stages. First, SiC ceramic foams which form the main net structure, were produced. by a replication method . SiC ceramic foam having different amounts of formulated silicic acid additive and citric acid (18%, 25 % and 50 % wt.) were sintered at 1200 °C for 90 min. As a consequence of the study, the composition of 18 (wt%) formulated silicic acid and citric acid was choosen as an optimum ratio. Thereafter, In the characterization of the sintered samples, conventional characterization methods were performed to analysis the sintered samples; X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for ultimate analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the determination of phase composition, Macro stereo microscope to reveal the morphology of the network structures and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for examination the densification behavior. Mechanical properties of the sintered samples were evaluated and characterized by a compressive testing instrument. These results revealed that the additive of silicic acid influenced and enhanced the mechanical properties of the sintered ceramic foams. In the last stage, Liquid aluminum metal was infiltrated without squeezing to the high porous foams with 10 and 20 ppi. Therefore, fabrication of functionally graded metal matrix composite was successfully carried out as two-layer in a body.
