Abstract

En s'inscrivant dans le prolongement d'une relecture critique actuelle des travaux de l'historien de l'art viennois, dont la Spätrömische Kunstindustrie, initialement parue en 1901, vient d'être traduite et publiée, pour la première fois en français, aux éditions Macula (2014), cette journée d'études reviendra sur les enjeux méthodologiques importants d'une oeuvre au fonctionnement heuristique complexe. En situant la culture matérielle au sein d'un réseau d'échanges (techniques, performatifs, somptuaires), Riegl lui redonne la dimension vitale que trop souvent, même encore aujourd'hui, l'histoire de l'art lui refuse. Les différentes interventions prévues au cours de cette journée devraient permettre de redécouvrir cet auteur important, qui pratiqua aussi bien le musée que l'université, et de poser la question de son actualité et de sa réception en France.
