Abstract

The Architecture of Nonviolence is a way of resisting the sterile and fortified architectural shapes of today, and it implies a deep understanding of the transformational role of the “other” in the creation of common space. This article proposes a critical review of the three main ideas associated with the production of space: one close to an empty territory, another as the result of the urban hegemonic projects and a third is an alternative towards a more humane city, described as architecture of nonviolence. This last category explores innovative ways for the creation of common spaces within cities, through ideas of transformation, inclusion and solidarity present in the concept of nonviolence. Considering life first, implies that architects will have to conceive projects that include the perspective, preferences, and dislikes of someone that is not their equal; and for governments an opportunity to design public policies with the other, and not for the other.
