Les guerres culturelles aux États-Unis

Abstract

En 1992, à la convention nationale du parti républicain, l’ultraconservateur Pat Buchanan affirme qu’une « guerre culturelle » (culture war) fait rage aux États-Unis. Décrite par Buchanan comme un combat pour définir l’identité nationale américaine, c’est-à-dire la signification de l’Amérique en tant que société, ce que les Américains ont été dans le passé, ce qu’ils sont aujourd’hui et ce qu’ils deviendront dans l’avenir, la guerre culturelle a été le cheval de bataille de multiples acteurs sociaux et politiques américains depuis les années 1970. Ces « guerriers culturels » estiment que les élites séculières et libérales se sont emparées du pouvoir aux États-Unis et cherchent à détruire les fondements spirituels de la société. Ils multiplient ainsi les efforts pour inciter les Américains et les élus à placer les enjeux du programme conservateur religieux et les sujets chers à la droite chrétienne à l’avant-scène des débats politiques.
