Abstract

The end of the 19th century witnesses the emergence of that « ultimate tool of knowledge » which is the scientific photography. According to G. Houbre, it realizes the appropriation of the hermaphroditic body represents nothing but an attempt to determine the social, representational and cognitive mechanisms announcing the paradigmatic change that occurs in this period. Considering that the end of the 19th century brings along with the science of sexuality and that of the classification of monstrosities (teratology) an epistemology that bears the marks of a complex movement of rationalization of the monstrous, one might also notice a change in the apprehension of the hermaphroditic body, a body that undergoes some kind of cultural taming as it leaves the sphere of the fabulous in order to enter the clinical paradigm.
