This article tries to accommodate the status of vowels in Amazigh roots. The central thrust of the work is to assess the validity of the classical conception of Amazigh roots as displayed in the Hamito-Semitic literature. The article is, accordingly, meant to revisit the previous approaches that have accommodated the root, and address the limitations that befall such classical approaches. First, an evaluation of the treatment of roots in Amazigh lexicographical works is provided. Then, an analysis of the role of vocalism in inflectional and derivational morphology is offered. For illustrative purposes, the study is based on a varied corpus belonging to many dialectal varieties.
