Abstract

Le travail est au cœur de l'organisation sociale - hier comme aujourd'hui - dans les sociétés industrielles et dans le Tiers Monde, mais son statut semble de plus en plus ambigu : D'une part la réduction du temps de travail, la semaine de 35 heures, la société des loisirs… semblent pourtant attester d'une certaine marginalisation du travail. D'autre part, le travail existe encore et se développe, même s'il se transforme, et le maintien d'un taux de chômage à un niveau élevé dans la majorité des pays industriels témoigne de la place (paradoxale) qu'il occupe. D'un autre côté, travailler ne signifie pas nécessairement l'assurance d'un revenu décent permettant de profiter des plaisirs de la société de consommation. Le travail par les revenus qu'il génère (ou ne génère pas) et les pratiques qu'il engendre, structure l'existence des individus et façonne les sociétés. L'automatisation a transformé le travail. La place du travail manuel tend à diminuer par rapport à celle du travail
