Abstract

Cet article étudie plusieurs textes de l'héraldiste Marc Vulson de la Colombier, dans lesquels il propose une généalogie imaginaire de Denis de Salvaing de Boissieu, premier président de la chambre des comptes du Dauphiné, en s'appuyant sur l'Histoire du chevalier Bayard de Jacques de Maille. Cet exemple permet d'envisager l'invention généalogique non pas comme une imposture, inscrite dans une logique juridique de la preuve, mais comme un signe extérieur de pouvoir qui cherche à susciter une adhésion d'ordre esthétique, fondée sur la vraisemblance. L'efficacité du récit tient à la fois à son inscription dans une tradition qui l'autorise et à sa disponibilité pour des intérêts divers (ceux de Denis de Salvaing mais aussi de la fraction la plus récente de la noblesse du Dauphiné, et même de l'ensemble de cette noblesse fragilisée par le procès des tailles).
