Abstract

« La Cigale et la Fourmi » parue en 1668 dans le recueil orné de gravures des Fables choisies, mises en vers de Jean de La Fontaine a fait l’objet de nombreuses éditions illustrées. L’étude s’attachera aux modes d’anthropomorphisation des personnages de la fable : le premier transformant l’homme en insecte, le deuxième hybride représentant un corps humain avec une tête d’insecte, et le troisième humanisant l’insecte. À travers l’exemple de J.J. Grandville et d’autres illustrateurs, l’analyse montrera la constance de trois éléments : l’instrument de musique associé à la Cigale et les grains ou la maison attribués à la Fourmi. Elle permettra de saisir la diversification des modes de représentation anthropomorphique, marquée par l’attention croissante portée notamment à la psychologie, au genre et à l’âge des protagonistes, en lien avec l’évolution des valeurs sociétales.
