Abstract

Si dans le sens commun, l’autorité est fréquemment associée à la coercition, un retour à son étymologie latine permet de faire émerger son sens premier, davantage lié au rôle de guide qui échoit à la figure d’autorité. Provenant étymologiquement du terme « auctoritas », lui-même issu du verbe latin « augere », c’est-à-dire, « augmenter », l’autorité serait donc avant toute chose la capacité à faire grandir. L’autorité est donc avant tout directrice voire créatrice, et seul l’hybris d’autorité a pu mener à son glissement de sens vers celui d’une domination subie.
