De l’autorité en sciences humaines, arts et littératures

Abstract

« L’autorité contraint à l’obéissance, mais la raison y persuade » écrit le Cardinal de Richelieu dans ses Maximes d’État. De ce point de vue, proche de la doxa populaire, faire montre d’autorité revient à exercer une pression sur des tiers afin qu’ils se plient aux desseins de la personne en position d’autorité. Cette obéissance est effective sans qu’il soit absolument nécessaire de faire appel aux facultés rationnelles des personnes sous le joug d’une autorité. Toutefois, il apparaît qu’une autorité durable ne peut qu’être celle reconnue légitimement par ceux sur qui elle s’exerce, et doit en effet essentiellement se penser en termes interrelationnels, comme Hannah Arendt le met bien en avant dans La Crise de la culture : « S’il faut vraiment définir l’autorité, alors ce doit être en l’opposant à la fois à la contrainte par force et à la persuasion par arguments ».
