Francophonie

Abstract

« Le lien du langage est peut-être le plus fort et le plus durable qui puisse unir les hommes », écrivait Alexis de Tocqueville dans De la démocratie en Amérique (1835). Ce qui pouvait passer pour l’intermédiaire nécessaire d’une communication rustique dans les premiers âges est devenu, au fil du développement de l’espèce humaine, un marqueur essentiel de l’identité culturelle (Albert, 1999). D’une domination de fait dans l’Europe de l’humanisme et des Lumières, la langue de Molière a ensuite voulu barrer les ambitions de l’Angleterre qui commerçait dans celle de Shakespeare dans tous les ports du globe. La diffusion du français fut d’abord une entreprise contrainte, menée dans les écoles du vaste empire colonial français. La francophonie, en tant que phénomène culturel (Senghor, 1968) et linguistique, pourra donc être distinguée de la Francophonie, comprise comme un acteur des relations internationales (Erfurt & Amelina, 2011).
