Abstract

This article follows the blog post titled “Poetic Memory or the Use of the Topos ’Abandoning a Child,’” published on SATOR’s research blog by Madeleine Jeay. It extends the reflection by focusing on animal-related topoi, analyzing the role of the Simorgh in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. The Simorgh, a mythical bird playing a crucial role in Persian culture, also appears in Farid al-Din Attar’s The Conference of the Birds (Mantiq al-Tayr), as well as in the metaphysical and philosophical writings of Avicenna and Suhrawardi. While topos configurations such as ANIMAL SAVES ABANDONED CHILD are widespread (e.g., abandoned children saved by tigers, wolves, monkeys, etc.), this article specifically examines the foundational scene of a close relationship between human sovereignty and animal sovereignty. Here, sovereignty is equally distributed between humans and animals, with the latter serving in its narrative function as an inseparable helper.
