Abstract

ABSTRACT : Swallowing, a skill of human beings that guarantees and promotes proper development, growth and nutrition. 1,2,3,4 For this, orofacial sensorimotor integration is important from an early age.12,3,4 Through myofunctional therapy, it can be enhanced by stimulating this region. 5,1,2,6,7,8 It is intended to observe the effect of therapy on the speed and time of swallowing. In addition to comparing this speed between female and male infants and older and younger than six months. Prospective experimental longitudinal analytical study not controlled before–after. Healthy infants with typical swallowing (n=6). The exclusion criteria were healthy infants with allergies, poor oral habits and/or parents who have proposed their baby as a volunteer for purposes other than those of assisting in research. The pre- and post-intervention swallowing speed in infants was assessed by T-Student and compared between older and younger than six months and women and men. The same thing happened with swallowing time. The results were statistically significant in increasing swallowing speed. There was a tendency to increase speed in female infants, in infants older than six months and a predisposition to decrease in time after therapy. There is an increase in swallowing speed. This rate is increased in female infants and in infants over six months. Add, the tendency to decrease swallowing time. Future research could study the same protocol applied in a more significant sample to obtain statistically valid results. KEYWORDS Myofunctional Therapy, Swallowing, Infant
