Abstract

ABSTRACT: The demand for this species in human consumption continues to rise, representing a high economic value alternative for artisanal fishermen. Consequently, there are more instances of smallersized specimens than the legally extractable size. To understand the fishing impact on natural banks, the area between the north of Pacasmayo (Chérrepe) and the south of Urricape (Malabrigo) was evaluated. Biological and oceanographic samplings were conducted using the Don Paco vessel. Samples were collected in eight zones, but catches were only made in four (Chérrepe, Playa Grande, Santa Elena, and Puémape) using baited traps (fish and squid remnants) placed for 10 minutes at established stations. Density and biomass were estimated per time with the captured specimens. Chérrepe exhibited the highest average density (8.7 Ind/10'9) and biomass (638.9 g /10'). The size range varied from 37 to 85 mm cephalothorax width, presenting a considerable size dispersion.
