Limiting envelopes of a porous limestone under true triaxial stress states

Abstract

The influence of the intermediate principal stress on the mechanical behavior of a porous limestone is investigated by means of true triaxial tests on dry samples. The limiting envelopes are built in octahedral planes and in the (P,Q) plane in order to give a good understanding of the three-dimensional surface. For the first part of the envelopes, a shape evolution is observed with the mean stress from triangular to hexagonal and then quasi circular. This evolution is interpreted in the light of well-known failure criteria. A particular interest of this study is the experimental determination of the cap surface by means of true triaxial tests.
