Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine if there is a significant difference between the condition of children born with the diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and children born without this condition, making a comparison regarding their auditory and visual memory. The methodology developed is quantitative, descriptive and comparative. The sample was selected in a probabilistic way through a census strategy. The study consisted of 40 female and male children aged 5 to 12 who were beneficiaries of social Transitional Housing programmes in the city of Lima. For data collection, the Visual Aural Digit Span test (VADS) was applied. The results obtained showed a significant difference between the condition of children born with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and those born without. These results demonstrate the importance of knowing the effect that this virus causes in the cognitive process of memory and the development of childhood learning. The conclusions showed that the differences between infants born with and without HIV are significant; according to the effect size measure (d> .80), a result that suggests that infants with HIV have much lower scores compared to the group that does not have this condition, and it is important to carry out more research of this type because it would help provide greater contributions to the scientific field.
