Patrones de ectoparasitismo en Microlophus occipitalis en la costa norte del Perú

Abstract

Se evaluaron los factores ambientales e intrínsecos que influyen en los patrones de ectoparasitismo definidos por la prevalencia (presencia), intensidad (número) y distribución corporal de los ectoparásitos en Microlophus. Occipitalis. Estos factores podrían estar afectando el fitness de esta especie. Adicionalmente, evaluamos de modo experimental los efectos del comportamiento nado en arena (sand-swimming) sobre la intensidad de ectoparásitos, ya que está siendo relacionado con la conducta de acicalamiento. Dentro de los factores ambientales, tanto el hábitat (bosque seco y playa arenosa) como la temporada (verano e invierno) influyeron en la prevalencia e intensidad ectoparasitaria, siendo menores en playa arenosa y en la temporada de verano, p=0.009. El comportamiento nado en arena mostró tener un efecto significativo en la remoción de ectoparásitos, p=0.012, en individuos que habitan playa de arena. Con respecto a los factores intrínsecos, solo el tamaño corporal evidenció un efecto significativo en la intensidad ectoparasitaria, p<0.0001; donde individuos de mayor tamaño presentaban una intensidad más alta. Por último, los ectoparásitos en su mayoría (más del 85%) estaban presentes en la zona del cuello.
