Exposición ocupacional a agentes de riesgo biológico

Abstract

Occupational exposure to biological risk agents is defined as vulnerability to microorganism exposure, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, genetically modified organisms, cell cultures, protozoa, and helminths. Direct or indirect contact with these agents can occur through various access routes (respiratory, digestive, blood, skin, and mucous membranes), leading to adverse effects. The most frequent outcomes include infections, allergies, and toxic effects, posing a health risk for workers across various economic sectors. The objective of this research is to compile scientific information on occupational exposure to biological agents. This compilation aims to update knowledge regarding the classification, monitoring, and control of such exposure, promoting a culture of biosafety self-care. Additionally, the research contributes to the prevention of infections resulting from occupational exposure by identifying and classifying agents based on risk levels. As of now, our country lacks regulations on risk control against biological agents. Preventive interventions rely on the Occupational Health and Safety Law and its regulations. Advances in the health sector address exposure to biological agents, focusing on preventing accidents with sharp objects and the proper disposal of biological waste. Similarly, the construction sector follows the Health Surveillance Protocol for workers exposed to biological agents. Presently, there exists bibliographic and international standards facilitating the creation and updating of technical documents on occupational exposure to biological risk agents. These documents can be applied across diverse economic sectors in Peru.
