Abstract

Introduction: In industrialized countries, a decrease in the prevalence of dental caries is observed due to the success of preventive and educational programs. However, the food lifestyle leads to the presence of other problems such as loss of tooth structure without association with bacteria, which is known as non-carious lesions. Objective: To determine the association between eating habits, parafunctional and oral hygiene in erosive dental wear in patients who come to the Oral Diagnostic Service of the Teaching Dental Clinic of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Materials and Methods: An analytical, cross-sectional, prospective and observational descriptive design was used. The sample was made up of 264 patients; who were aged between 18 and 60 years. The presence and severity of dental wear was determined using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) index. A score was attributed according to the extent of the injury. The evaluation was in all the teeth and the registration was made for each quadrant. For the statistical analysis of the results, the SPSS 20 program was used. Results: The prevalence of erosive tooth wear was n=94%. An association of erosive dental wear with dental clenching (p<0.01), nail biting (p<0.01), the use of vinegar in salads (p=0.012) and the consumption of yogurt (p=0.009) was found. Conclusions: The frequency of erosive dental wear was high in the population that attended the teaching dental clinic; being the associated parafunctional habits dental clenching and nail biting; and association according to foods included in their diet and frequency of associated consumption, vinegar and yogurt.
