Abstract

This paper analyzes the association between segments of infant mortality (neonatal and postneonatal) and selected factors, using the database of the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2015-2018 of Peru. We analyzed 39807 weighted cases of children younger than one month and 31930 weighted cases of children older than one month of life, but younger than one year. Binary Poisson regression was applied to examine each of the analysis models. The results of the final model established an association between neonatal mortality and residing in a dwelling between 2500 and more meters above sea level, belonging to a very poor, poor or medium wealth index, the child being born small and the mother having received inadequate prenatal care during her pregnancy. In the postneonatal period, it was found that living in a house between 1500 and 2499 meters above sea level, living in the rest of the coast, highlands and jungle regions, that the mother's education was only up to primary school and that the mother was less than 20 years old at the time of delivery, are factors statistically associated with postneonatal mortality.
