¿Por qué no dejan a los hombres violentas?: aspectos sociales y culturales vinculados con el mantenimiento de las relaciones en mujeres afectadas por maltrato conyugal

Abstract

Realizamos un estudio cualitativo, con el objetivo de analizar los elementos sociales y culturales en su asociación con el mantenimiento de relaciones de pareja entre mujeres afectadas por la violencia conyugal. Para esto, examinamos las características y los relatos de experiencias de un grupo de mujeres peruanas que reportaron haber sido maltratadas de diversas formas por sus cónyuges o convivientes. Así, buscamos identificar las ideas y situaciones que contribuyen con la preservación de relaciones abusivas o que dificultan los intentos de terminarlas. Los resultados del estudio evidencian que, más allá de las características individuales de las mujeres o de sus voluntades o intenciones, su permanencia junto a hombres que las maltratan aparece condicionada por idearios tradicionales sobre la familia y las relaciones de género, las redes de familiares y otros allegados que intervienen para recomponer los vínculos de pareja, y los contextos de vida violentos e inseguros (que propician la búsqueda de protección). Hacia el final del trabajo, discutimos estos hallazgos, los relacionamos con la teoría y los estudios previos, y revisamos sus implicancias para los esfuerzos y políticas de prevención y atención del maltrato conyugal.
