La sismicidad en el mundo

Abstract

Cada año, los diferentes observatorios sismológicos determinan los parámetros hipocentrales de un gran número de sismos con epicentros en las zonas sísmicas que caracterizan a cada país. Por otro lado, la agencia internacional USGS haciendo uso de la información proveniente de la red sísmica mundial reporta la ocurrencia anual en el mundo de aproximadamente 7,000 sismos. En general, la localización epicentral de estos sismos ha permitido identificar las regiones en donde se ubican las zonas más sísmicas en el mundo y que junto a las medidas de anomalías magnéticas positivas y negativas alternadas en una y otra parte del eje de las dorsales oceánicas, han conducido a explicar la expansión de los fondos oceánicos y dibujar la estructura del globo. El conocimiento de la tectónica global ha permitido comprender la causa y los mecanismos de generación de los sismos.
