Abstract

La esclerosis múltiple es una enfermedad neurológica con una prevalencia global aproximada de 1 por cada 100000 habitantes que genera de forma gradual severa discapacidad. No se conoce factores de riesgo bien establecidos sobre los cuales se pueda intervenir, sin embargo, recientemente ha surgido una posible relación con los bajos niveles de Vitamina D (valores inferiores a 20ng/mL). Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar dicha asociación en la población asegurada de Trujillo (Essalud). El presente fue un estudio observacional, analítico, de casos y controles. El estudio incluyo como casos a todos los pacientes diagnosticados debidamente (criterios Mc Donald 2010) con esclerosis múltiple, tipo recurrente-remitente (MS R-R), de los dos principales hospitales de EsSalud en la ciudad de Trujillo, durante el año 2018. Se consideró 4 controles por cada caso. De los 14 casos solo 12 cumplieron los criterios de Mc Donald para el diagnóstico de MS RR, y no se encontró relación estadísticamente significativa entre los niveles de vitamina D y la enfermedad. Parece ser que el nivel bajo de vitamina D no es en sí mismo un factor de riesgo, sino un factor confusor, y más bien la baja exposición solar a través de mecanismos aún no conocidos (y que en algunas poblaciones se puede reflejar como niveles bajos de vitamina D) actúan como factor, no único, pero predisponente para el desarrollo de la enfermedad.
