Abstract

The research seeks to establish the applicability in Colombia of the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) theories for the 1975-2003 period, and the International Fisher Effect (EFI) for the 1980-2003 period, with monthly information on the inflation rate differential, interest rate differential and percentage change in the exchange rate of the peso against the dollar. For the PPP theory, the results show that the differential of the inflation rates and the percentage change in the exchange rate are stationary in the first difference, they have a cointegration or long-term relationship, and the changes in the variables are not presented. in relation one to one, therefore, the applicability of the PPA theory for Colombia is rejected. The results obtained for the EFI theory show that the differential of the interest rates and the percentage variation of the exchange rate are stationary in the first difference, have a cointegration relationship, and the changes of the variables are presented in relation one to one Therefore, the applicability of the EFI theory for Colombia is confirmed.
