Methodology for selecting projects in a project portfolio

Abstract

Continuous changes in the environment affect the duration of the development phases of the modern organization and require the use of more and more resources. Trying to cope with this challenge, organizations use techniques proposed in project portfolio management. The main goal of the dissertation is to develop an original author's methodology for selecting projects when integrating them into the project portfolio of the organization. In the first chapter are analyzed: definition of project portfolio; the differences between the concepts of portfolio management and program management; the place of management of the project portfolio within the organization; existing methods of project selection; the criteria for selecting a project. The second chapter presents a methodology for creating an author's methodology for selecting projects in a project portfolio. The following elements are summarized and analyzed in the chapter: a pilot study was conducted among practitioners; existing popular methodologies; synthesized an author's methodology; the elements of the methodology are explained in stages. The third chapter focuses on conducting an empirical study and appraising the methodology for selecting projects in a project portfolio. It includes: the formulation of the empirical study; initial study among three organizations on the territory of the country; summaries and conclusions on the basis of which recommendations for future research are made.
