Формално и семантично изразяване на биологичния пол в балканския езиков ареал

Abstract

The dissertation deals with possibilities of expressing sex as a classificatory concept in Bulgarian, Greek and Romanian languages. Their sex-related lexicon is presented on an intra-systemic and comparative level. In each language, nouns and their functional equivalents carrying sex-related information for humans and animals are studied. Morphological methods for encoding sex and semantic potential of sex-marked roots are outlined. The lexical material is presented in more than 150 tables by formal features (endings or suffixes), with the lexemes for women and men being given in correlative pairs. Cases of semantic and word-forming asymmetries between both pair members are highlighted. The dissertation begins with a theoretical introduction, which briefly traces the different concepts of gender – genetic/biological, social and grammatical, and localizes the intersections between natural and grammatical gender. In three consecutive parts, sex-related lexicon is presented: in Bulgarian, Greek and Romanian. The most significant research weight falls on Greek with special attention on diglossia and dual-gender personal nouns. The final part presents similarities and differences between the three languages in sex-coding: by heteronymy, inflection, parallel, straight and reverse derivation, conversion. Gender-neutral and epicene vocabulary is also treated. The dissertation ends with a short glossary containing a number of innovative terminological proposals for Bulgarian.
