Durostorum during the Principate and Late antiquity. Natural resources, history, human potential, economy

Abstract

Durostorum is one of the most important centers in the province of Lower / Second Moesia - a legionary camp, a road station, an economic, political and religious center. The life began with the accommodation of the XI Claudius Legion at the beginning of the II century. Life in Durostorum is concentrated in three separate topographic units - legion fortress, canabae and vicus, and with the construction of the fortification on the Danube at the end of III - at the beginning of the 4th century, a fourth was added to them. Durostorum is a good example of ethnic diversity and a clearly distinguishable social structure of the population. Although in a more limited amount, the epigraphic monuments are sufficiently informative, and along with the archaeological material, allow the restoration of the picture of the demographic processes taking place in the city. Ethnic diversity is visible in anthroponymy, religious diversity, the various influences reflected in material culture. The natural and geographical characteristics of Durostoroum are one of the main factors that determine the trends in its economic development. The natural resources of the city and its hinterland determine the professional structure of the local population and the development of certain crafts. Serious development receiving crafts related to stone processing, construction, ceramic production etc. Trade, agriculture and animal husbandry play an important role.
