`The Armenian Catholicos Mkrtich Khrimian and His Role in the Armenian Question` Key Words: Armenian Question, Mkrtich Khrimian, Patriarch, Catholicos. Armenian question, which created difficulties for Turkey in her international relations, has 150 years of history. So many faces have played very important roles for the emergence and being an international issue of this problem. However, to be in the lead with his ideas and activities, Mkrtich Khrimian became a distinctive figure among the others for the Armenians. In this study, entitled `The Armenian Catholicos Mkrtich Khrimian and His Role in the Armenian Question`, it is tried to be pointed out his role in the development of Armenian question. He was born in Van in 1820, became a church member in 1854, served as prelate in Van and Muş. Then, he was appointed to the Patriarchate of Istanbul and four years later in 1873 resigned his office. After that, he led the Armenian delegation, which aimed to present their demands to the Great Powers, in the Congress of Berlin. At last, he was appointed to the throne of Catholicos and served this office till his death. Mkrtich Khrimian, who showed negative attitudes towards the Ottoman State during his fifty years of evangelical life, formed, in a sense, the historical process of the Armenian question. The biography of Khrimian, which has such an importance in the Armenian question, is scrutinized in the light of archival documents, books and articles belonging to the native and foreign scholars. viu

Bu meselenin ortaya çıkması ve uluslararası bir sorun haline gelmesinde rolü olan birçok sima vardır. Ancak bu şahsiyetler arasında, faaliyetleri ve fikirleriyle ön plana çıkmış olan Mıgırdıç Kırımyan' m Ermeni dünyasında ayrı bir yeri vardır. `Ermeni Katogikosu Mıgırdıç Kırımyan ve Ermeni Meselesindeki Rolü` adlı bu çalışmada Kırımyan' in hayatı ele alınarak, Ermeni meselesinin tarihi gelişimindeki rolü verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Kırımyan 1820 yılında Van'da doğmuş, 1854 yılında kiliseye intisab etmiş, Van ve Muş'ta piskoposluk yapmıştır. Ardından 1869'da İstanbul Ermeni Patrikliği 'ne atanmış ve dört yıl sonra bu görevden istifa etmiştir. Berlin Kongresi'nde Ermeni isteklerini büyük devletlere sunan heyetin başkanlığını yapmış, 1 892 yılında ise Katogikos seçilerek ölümüne kadar bu görevi sürdürmüştür. Yaklaşık elli yıllık kilise mensubiyeti sırasında Osmanlı Devleti'ne karşı menfi bir tutum sergileyen Mıgırdıç Kırımyan' m hayatı bir anlamda Ermeni meselesinin tarihi sürecini teşkil etmektedir.
