Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton: caratteristiche botaniche, proprietà biologiche e nutraceutiche

Abstract

Vaccinium macrocarpon is a plant that belongs to the Ericaceae family, whose fruit is called "american cranberry". Thanks to the richness and variety of bioactive compound it owns, is considered a "functional food". Specifically, the presence of ascorbic acid and polyphenols, makes its action as an antioxidant agent, interesting, while specifically compounds as proanthocyanidins, make it usable also to fight some types of infections. The study of this fruit and its bioactive compounds could lead to interesting discoveries in the medical field.
