Colapso y flujo de detritos de Aobamba, Cusco, Perú

Abstract

La cuenca del río Aobamba en donde ocurrieron los movimientos en masa que se describen, se localiza en la provincia de Urubamba en el Departamento de Cusco, al sureste de Perú. Por su parte, la Central Hidroeléctrica de Machu Picchu que fue la instalación más importante afectada por estos eventos, se encuentra sobre el rio Vilcanota a 300 m aguas arriba de la desembocadura del río Aobamba (Figura A.25.1). Entre 1996 y 1999 ocurrieron cuatro eventos en la cuenca de este rio: el primero fue el colapso y flujo de detritos del 12 de julio de 1996 que se originó en la quebrada Orcoscancha; luego el que se considera el más destructivo, el 27 de febrero de 1998 en la quebrada Rayancancha. A este le siguieron otros dos, uno el 12 de marzo y otro el 22 de noviembre de 1998 en la misma quebrada Orcoscancha. Estos tres últimos eventos coincidieron con las fechas de ocurrencia del fenómeno El Nino de 1997 y 1998 (Fidel y Huamani, 2000, Guzmán et al., 1999). Por otra parte, vale la pena mencionar que la destrucción de partes de un antiguo camino Incaico que cruza el rio Aobamba sugiere que por varios siglos no se presentaban en esta cuenca eventos con la magnitud de la ocurrida en el ano de 1998 (Carlotto et al., 2000).
