Abstract

El presente trabajo examina el papel y simbolismo de las mocihuaquetzqueh, mujeres que fallecieron durante su primer parto, en la cosmovisión indígena prehispánica. Estas mujeres, vistas como guerreras, poseían un destino escatológico que las conectaba tanto con lo celestial como con el inframundo. La relación entre el acto de parir y la muerte se explora en profundidad, reflejando el carácter sacrificial de sus muertes y el impacto de su figura en los rituales de duelo y en la mitología. Además, se destaca su representación en las encrucijadas, donde eran considerados fantasmas que volvían para atormentar a los vivos, simbolizando un vínculo poderoso entre la maternidad, la vida, y la fertilidad, en un contexto que revela la dualidad de su existencia como figuras sagradas y siniestras en la cultura náhuatl. Este estudio proporciona una visión integral de cómo la muerte en el parto está imbuida de significados religiosos y sociales, subrayando la complejidad del rol femenino en la sociedad indígena
