Ancient Proto–Indo–European noun stems have traditionally been thought to group noun categories following non-semantic criteria. From a diachronic, semantic and inter–linguistic or typological perspective on Proto–Indo– European noun stems, we analyse the ancient Greek ι–stem category and propose that this category can be regarded as a semantic–based one with an ancient diminutive value.
