According to Julián Marías, my life, that is to say, the life of each person, in its concrete reality is not any sort of “thing”, but rather a project, undertaking or mission; it happens, goes on making itself. The traditional Christian perspective calls for an intensification of knowledge –relatively ignored until recently– of what it means to be a person. The weighty influence of Hellenic thought, foreign to Christianity, has steered subsequent philosophical and theological thought toward a kind of “substantialism” which has led in turn to the reduction of the person to a very particular kind of “thing”. “Selfness” (not identity) and “uniqueness” (not self-sufficiency) are decisive words in order to know myself. According to this new logic, I see myself as unmistakably somebody, not as a “something”, a “who” and as such different from all the “whats”, with a proper name. I feel myself to be free and therefore responsible, capable of making choices and decisions. My reality is projective because it consists of an anticipation of the future, of who I intend to be.
