Abstract

Developments and changes in new media technologies, digital game and player concepts, intersects with the most of concepts and phenomena in the critical media studies literature. This study examines the structure of digital games in the digital economy, which is a component of the new media, from an economic-political perspective. Based on the discussions in the digital game literature, conceptual debates about culture industry, consumer culture and cognitive capitalism are included in this study. Also, the study reveals how the game and the player have become a product of the cultural industry and the place of digital games in the digital economy from a critical point of view. For this purpose, digital games are claimed to be both products of the cultural industry and a structure that serves capitalist production. In this study, the conceptual analysis of digital game and player, cultural industry and digital economy are discussed together with the concept fields. In this study, unlike the existing researches and perspectives, it is explained that digital games have cultural components and the concept of digital game is a phenomenon that needs to be rethought. Conceptual analysis of digital games and players are discussed together with cultural industry and digital economy concept sets in the study. Nowadays, digital games are not only transformed into a commodity, but also continue to be produced again due to the consumption culture. Therefore, it can be stated that digital games consist of cultural, intellectual and creative industrial components and are produced for commodity value.
