Abstract

Serbest radikal, bir veya daha fazla eşleşmemiş elektrona sahip, bağımsız var olma yeteneğine sahip atom veya molekül olarak tanımlanabilir. Eşleşmemiş bir elektron, bir orbitalde tek başına bir elektrondur. Bir orbitalde iki elektron farklı dönüş yönlerine sahiptir ve elektronlar orbitallerde eşleştirildiklerinde daha kararlıdır. Bu nedenle serbest radikaller kararsızdırlar. Serbest radikallere genellikle üst simge nokta (•) olarak, bir veya daha fazla eşleşmemiş elektronun varlığını belirtmek için eklenir. Serbest radikaller yüksek enerjilidirler ve boşta kalmış tek elektronlarını çift oluşturmak isterler. Yüksek enerjisi ile çift oluşturma eğiliminde olan serbest radikaller insan vücudunda bulunan biyomoleküllerin (lipit, nükleik asit, protein) yapısına girerek oksidasyona neden olabilmektedir. Çevre kirliliği, orman yangınları, alkol ve sigara tüketimi, ksenobiyotikler, UV ışınları ve X-ışınları serbest radikal oluşumunu artıran kaynaklardır.
