Tarih yazıcılığından tarih felsefesine: Mehmet Ârif’in “Muhâkemeli Tarih” anlayışı

Abstract

Mehmet Ârif Bey was born in Erzurum and lived in 19th century. He was one of our historiographers of Ottoman army. He did not write only `vukuat` but also examined them himself. Before having retired, he wrote his memories by the other name `experimentations`. His children said that he engaged with philosophy of Islam and ethics. However it is not known if he has any philosophical work or not, but he had a philosophical mode in the introduction of his book, Başımıza Gelenler, which was published a lot of times at the different dates. He tried to view history with philosophical mode and offered to carve out “a new consciousness” by moving “muhakemeli tarih” concept. This consciousness, he expressed with Ibn Khaldun’s concept of the ‘asabiya’.
