Abstract

Giovanni Santini (1787-1877), allievo degli astronomi milanesi Barnaba Oriani e Angelo Cesaris, divenne direttore dell’Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova nel 1817 e la sua direzione durò per quasi tutto il XIX secolo. Sin da subito egli si adoperò per rinnovare la modesta e obsoleta strumentazione scientifica della Specola padovana. Nel 1836, in particolare, egli acquistò dall’Imperial Regio Istituto Politecnico di Vienna un Circolo meridiano, strumento di alta precisione per la determinazione delle posizioni stellari. Con questo strumento e in collaborazione con il suo allievo Virgilio Trettenero (1822-1863), egli eseguì per un periodo di circa 30 anni le osservazioni sulle quali si basano i cinque "Cataloghi padovani", noti anche come "Cataloghi di Santini", comprendenti un totale di quasi 10000 stelle, con astri fino alla 10a magnitudine. Si tratta di uno dei più imponenti lavori di astronomia classica portati a compimento nel corso dell’Ottocento in Italia. Il Circolo meridiano è tuttora montato all’interno del suo cupolino, sulle due piramidi di sostegno originali, in attesa di restauro.
