Este capítulo analiza el desempeño de la economía costarricense desde la perspectiva del desarrollo humano sostenible, con énfasis en el año 2012. Los conceptos centrales que se evalúan son las oportunidades, la estabilidad y la solvencia, a partir de la evolución de diversos indicadores económicos, sociales e institucionales. Las oportunidades expresan el acceso que tiene la población a bienes y servicios de calidad, y se materializan en la creación de nuevos empleos y en una mejor remuneración de los mismos para los diferentes grupos sociales y en las distintas zonas del país. Son consecuencia del crecimiento económico, que a su vez es el resultado de los procesos de inversión, la formación de recursos humanos, el aumento de la productividad y el uso racional de los recursos naturales. De ahí que las oportunidades se evalúan no solo con base en su cuantía, sino también a la luz de la equidad en su distribución.
