Abstract

En el 2007 se describieron 10 especies nuevas de gusanos poliquetos de la familia Cirratulidae para la costa Pacífica de Costa Rica. También se presenció una de las temporadas de anidación de tortugas baula más exitosa de los últimos años. Se actualizó el inventario de cetáceos, y se estimó una riqueza de 29 especies, un 34% de las 85 que hay en el mundo. A Costa Rica llegan aproximadamente 240 ballenas cada año, y es el único sitio del mundo donde se ha detectado que las poblaciones de ballenas jorobadas de ambos hemisferios coinciden para aparearse y parir, lo cual permite el intercambio genético. La zona de apareamiento, durante la estación seca, está localizada en los alrededores de Isla del Caño, en punta Marenco y en Bahía Cuajiniquil, en zonas aún no protegidas. En el 2007 Costa Rica pagó la deuda a la CBI y pudo votar en contra de la cacería de ballenas a nivel mundial.
