Abstract

En Costa Rica, el desarrollo en la zona costera y marina es poco planificado y no contempla visiones sustentables que consideren la vulnerabilidad ambiental. Aunque luego del 2008 hubo descenso en el desarrollo de infraestructura costera, este continuó hasta 2013. El número de habitantes en las provincias costeras aumentó y, dentro de éstas, muchos habitantes de zonas rurales se mudaron al estilo de vida de las zonas urbanas. Para eliminar desechos, el uso de camión recolector predominó, pero la costumbre de enterrar, botar en un hueco o quemar la basura continuó en el 2013. El descargue de aguas negras fue dirigido mayormente a tanque séptico, aunque también fue dirigido a alcantarillas o cloacas y a uso de letrinas. El desarrollo de infraestructura turística costera y de visitación de cruceros y pasajeros descendió desde 2010 hasta 2013. Un estudio publicado en 2013 sobre importación de pesticidas reveló que aunque el área dedicada a agricultura en el país aumentó sólo 10,72% entre 1977 y 2009, el promedio anual de pesticidas crudos importados por el MAG aumentó 300%, en esos 32 años. Un total de 13 de 16 de los pesticidas importados en esos años fueron altamente tóxicos para la fauna acuática y cuatro fueron altamente tóxicos para la flora acuática.
